NOAILLES (AN)

Where
are we? Rue du Marché des Capucins, 13001

Historical and chronological situation: XIX century

Introduction: We're in one of the busiest areas of the city. Noailles is the neighbor of the Canebière, in the heart of Marseille, popularly known for its market, here the atmosphere is very lively and colorful.

History: The market street "Des Capucins" is the center of this quarter, here they sell kilos and kilos of fruit and vegetables daily and the prices are especially appealing, which is why it is always very crowded. In addition to fruit and vegetables, in the perpendicular streets we find typical oriental food shops, such as herbalist's shops, spice shops, etc., but we can also find fishmongers and butchers, although, as it is a predominantly Arab neighbourhood, halal meat is usually sold.

The name of Capucins street is due to the fact that in the past there was a convent of the Capuchin order here, which was finally abolished and only the name remained.

Historically, the district is named for the Noailles street, created at the same time as the Canebière, in 1666, and where large noble families lived until the end of the 18th century. It is from the development of traffic that the rich merchants settled in its streets and Noailles became a popular place, so it had to be enlarged. The street Noailles and the big buildings were eliminated to widen the Canebière at the end of the 19th century.

From the 2000's, the quarter is as we know it today, with its crowded market, with most of the inhabitants being immigrants and numerous buildings in poor condition.
